Poway is a unique city in San Diego County, with a population of approximately 50,542 residents. Originally an unincorporated community in San Diego County, Poway officially became a city in December 1980, and its rural roots gave rise to its slogan "The City in the Country." Poway lies north of the city of San Diego and south of the city of Escondido. Some nearby communities of San Diego include Rancho Bernardo, Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and in the county to the east, the community of Ramona. Poway is located three miles east of Interstate 15, and just west of Highway 67. Public transportation service is provided in Poway by the Metropolitan Transit System, including an intra-City route and several commuter routes.
Within the City limits are 16,337 housing units including apartments, condos, and single family homes. The City’s vacancy rate is approximately less than 2%. There is a broad continuum of housing options available, ranging from multi-family apartments to single-family homes on large rural parcels. 80% of the City’s housing units are single-family dwellings. Besides, there are seven beautifully maintained, award-winning workforce housing complexes in Poway.
Poway calls itself "The City in the Country," and it has retained much of its rustic charm through its transformation into a thriving bedroom community close to the City of San Diego and other areas of the county. Incorporated in 1980, Poway is known for its many recreational opportunities. Lake Poway, formed when the Poway dam was built, is well utilized and offers fishing, picnic areas and boating; and the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, whose primary purpose is habitat conservation, makes it a wonderful place to go hiking. The Poway Center for the Performing Arts brings live performances and drama to the city, and a new state-of-the art library opened recently as part of the Poway Road revitalization efforts. Old Poway Park is the center of the community hosting a number of events each year including craft shows, farmer's markets, and blacksmith demonstrations.
The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) was created in 1871 and encompasses all of Poway and the nearby communities. Today, PUSD has grown to more than 30 elementary, middle, and high schools, and it even has a home-schooling program. PUSD has a record of high performance, and one of its students, Anurag Kashyap (an eighth grader at the time), became the 2005 National Spelling Bee Champion after winning on the word "appoggiatura". Within San Diego County, the Poway Unified School District is the third largest and serves approximately 33,000 students.
