The charming, seaside community of Solana Beach is nestled along the northern coast of San Diego County, and is approximately a 30 minute drive from downtown San Diego. Its main access routes include Interstate 5, Highway 101, Lomas Santa Fe Drive, and Via de la Valle.
Until 1923, the main area known as Solana Beach was originally called Lockwood Mesa. The area first settled by the George H. Jones family in 1886. When Lake Hodges Dam was built in 1917-18, the area encompassing Solana Beach began to develop rapidly. Solana Beach started as a farming community with gorgeous bluffs overlooking the ocean and now it is known for its shopping, with a mix of interesting art galleries and boutiques, furniture shops, surfing outfitters, and other unique stores.
It offers 1.7 miles of coastline for swimming and surfing. Unlike other spots in North County where the wide, straight beaches are uninterrupted for miles, the coastline in Solana Beach is more convoluted and the cliffs encroach right to the water's edge in places, making them impassible especially at high tide. Staircases descend the cliffs at practically every street corner, so every part of the beach is accessible vertically or horizontally. This makes a visit to Solana Beach a more adventurous experience. One staircase might lead you to a deserted locale where you can be alone with your friends and your thoughts; another might lead to a busy beach teeming with surfers, families and fishermen.
Solana Beach is served by the Solana Beach School District and the San Dieguito Union High School District. There are three high schools and one middle school with in the district. Currently, the Solana Beach School District has six elementary schools: Solana Vista (grades K-3), Skyline (grades 4-6 and the K-6 Global Education Program), Solana Santa Fe (grades K-6), Solana Highlands (grades K-4), Carmel Creek (grades K-4), and Solana Pacific (5-6). A seventh school, within the Pacific Highlands Ranch community, is in the planning stages.
